We have more COVID-19 cases unreported – NCDC

Dr. Chikwe Ihekweazu, the Director-General of the NCDC said on Monday during the Presidential Task Force on COVID-19 press briefing in Abuja that the centre dishes out lesser positive cases of the pandemic. He opined that there are several people with the disease who have never get tested yet.

During the press briefing, Ihekweazu urged Nigerians to shun social gatherings and maintain the right distancing.

While Dr Ihekweazu was speaking at the briefing has also cautioned against the belief that COVID-19 does not exist in Nigeria.

“We have to make it socially unacceptable to be seen outside the home without face masks. We must also discourage one another from mass gatherings that are not necessary”, the NCDC DG said.

Speaking on the recent federal government lifted the ban on religious activities, he advised that people should worship at home as not attending the religious activities does not stop God from answering prayers.

“That a church or mosque decides to open doesn’t make it compulsory for you to attend. Attendance is still a personal responsibility. Even when airlines reopen, we all have to think hard: How important is that trip?

“The health of each of us depends on the actions each of us will take over the next few months”.

“Some people are giving fictitious names during COVID-19 testing. There’s no reason whatsoever to doubt the reality of COVID-19 in Nigeria. In fact, we believe there are more cases out there than we’ve found. Behind each of those numbers, we announce daily are people. Four Governors have themselves announced they’ve been infected.”

Nigeria now recorded 403 new cases of coronavirus, bringing the total number of confirmed infections in the country to 16,085 while 420 people have died
